america! there is only the america that can't believe how bad this guy did in the debate! obama lost despite mitt romney doing this. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs, i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs. i like big bird. i actually like you, too. i'm not going to spend money on things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> he [ bleep ] fired big bird! he still won walking away. romney won with the sound up. >> you're entitled to your own airplane and your own house but not to your own facts. >> romney won with the sound off. dude, he's yelling at you! look up! look up! what are you looking at? what are you writing that's so important? what are you doing -- oh, that's not -- oh, i didn't realize. that is impressive work. i didn't realize that. maybe you could give that to mitt romney as a souvenir of the night he crushed you in that debate. >> my gosh. okay. >> so that's what he's doing. because i'm sitting there going, what's he doing? >> good morning, everyone. >> it makes more sense. it fills in the blank. >> that gives us proper context. >> it i
the challenge mitt romney faces against president obama, the clearest shift from the debates came in the 2000 race pitting governor george w. bush of texas against vice president al gore. it resulted from a rare combination of factors with demonstrating effects on mr. gore's campaign. and i guess the question is, can mitt romney pull something that would really kind of just give people a page-turner on, a, his personality, which he doesn't appear to really have one beyond being a really nice person. no, i'm serious. he has to show empathy and sympathy and a connection with people that he hasn't up until now. or, steve rattner, to be more specific about his policies, which many argue he hasn't been very specific nor paul ryan. >> he hasn't been very specific. but i think his bigger problem is the first one you said. that he's got to create some sense of connectivity or relationship with the voters. i think that's really his goal as well as what we were talking about in the earlier segment of trying to bring a clear depiction of obama's policies and the fact they haven't done everything they we
scolding a school kid. it was bad body language for obama. i'm sure that's something that debate coaches say, look, always assume there's a camera on you and always look pleasant and interested and engaged, even when you're not talking. >> interested. we're reporting this morning the president's team is adjusting its strategy and we've seen mitt romney further go into his 47% comment, saying he cares of course about 100% of americans. proof this is still ever evolving, chris? >> absolutely. we have more than a month still till the election, and look, it was a good first debate. i don't think there's any question that romney won. but there are two more debates, the vice presidential debate. and a month of day-to-day campaigning, and obama has been more effective in that campaigns and ads than romney has. the best you can say for romney, this was in danger of slipping away from him if he had a bad debate. he's made it competitive again, but a long way away from winning and both sides will go back with renewed vigor. >> how important is the vice presidential debate? >> i don't think terribl
